Sweet lies

“You have such wonderful hands, perfect for handling a sword.” Pale fingers intertwining with long, slender ones. "You flatter me too much. Do you really think it's very good for my ego?" A modest response from a modest English officer. "Flattery implies a certain amount of lying. If the truth flatters you, then you merely have a lack of ego." The voice sounded chilling but rehearsed, almost as if recounted from a previous memory. The hand retracted from its position, ripping apart the fragile contact. The slender fingers seemed brittle and like only a fragment without the joining fingers. But everything about him was just a fragment of what it once was. The sharp gaze ushered him to leave, one that he neither had the will nor the authority to question. He knew exactly what he had done wrong but he never asked. To see only a glimpse of tender emotion was enough to abstain from letting his thoughts escape his lips. Staring out at the filled in map, the prison of ink that was closing in on every man that didn’t sail the flag of the East India Trading Company. If only that were solace for the sweet lies and half truths that had been whispered in his ear so long ago, but honesty was apparently only a state of mind. If they were genuine then he would have heard them once more, following the news of death he escaped. But the only whispers he heard was of that accursed name. Of the bird that escaped every cage it was locked up in.
